A Bit About Me
Hi there! I’m Joey and I talk (a lot!)! I’m serious! I talk and do cool stuff for a living, and if that’s where you’re heading towards, I think I can help! On weekdays, I run my own company planning and executing team buildings, CSR programmes and corporate events for my clients.
During the weekend, things get even wilder where I emcee for public events such as bazaar, running events and more! I would love to chat and help with anything related to team building programmes, event planning, public speaking and more! Or, if you’re considering diving into the world of entrepreneurship, let’s have a chat on business and personal growth!
-
I was born and raised in Johor Bahru (JB) and moved to Kuala Lumpur (KL) at 18. My family is currently in Singapore.
-
I attended SJKC for primary school (Chinese school), where my mom taught for 27 years. The main lesson I learned there was the importance of fighting for your place in the world through hard work, even when resources are limited.
-
I participated in Olympia Maths, public speaking, debate competitions, charity events, gala dinners, Mandarin slam poetry, ballet, and piano recitals.
-
Our school maximised students' creative potentials to generate funding for expansion and restoration after monsoon damage, due to less government support compared to traditional government school (SK).
-
For secondary school, I was accepted as an ASEAN Scholar in Singapore, but it just wasn’t the right time to leave home yet. Instead, I attended a private school in JB due to gang issues in local government schools.
-
The difference in curriculum delivery was stark; the private school prioritised academics and lacked extracurricular activities, which made me feel like I was missing out. However, I learned that money buys resources, and students with more privileges had better access to support, counselling, and disability assistance.
Educational Journey
-
I pursued a degree in Psychological Science at Monash University, a path suggested by my dad based on world rankings.
-
Initially, I wanted to study Gender & Sexuality Studies, but I ended up in Psychology, facing the realities and challenges of low employability in the field due to high supply and low demand which I found out after that.
-
Moving to KL as a teen involved a lot of self-realisation and social navigation as an independent individual. I had to re-adjust my intentions in achieving my goals.
Professional Experience
-
Early Work Life
-
During my foundation years, I worked part-time in F&B, including midnight shifts, but had to stop due to health impacts.
-
I then moved to a co-working space company, where one of the owners noticed my communication skills and referred me to their team-building company in 2019.
-
My first clients included Petronas, Oppo, Google, Twitch, and Microsoft. My role involved proposals, sales, hosting, marketing, event planning, and manpower.
-
Although underpaid, I learned every aspect of the team-building industry and built an extensive portfolio, running the company for the owner during the MCO lockdown, which allowed for rapid expansion and big clients.
-
Post-graduation, I was offered the role of general manager at said company and led the company from 270k annual revenue in the previous year to 1.5M during my first-year as GM.
-
Start-Up
-
-
I live by the motto “Do first, think later.”, I founded a team-building business startup focusing on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) and gamified activities.
-
Our impact is on team bonding, providing activities to deliver specific goals and rewarding performance with donations to charities, such as food packs, funds, and school supplies, working with NGOs.
-
We prioritise creating genuinely engaging and positively impactful activities for clients, rather than traditional, old-school methods.
-
Overhead costs are low, and we achieve team-building ESG and CSR goals through customised activities designed to identify and nurture specific traits within team members, enhancing working relationships through improved communication patterns.

Emceeing

-
My public speaking journey started in primary school and evolved through my first team-building job, with opportunities arising from client outsourcing.
-
To get into this field, I suggest reaching out to NGOs, starting with small events, and networking extensively. It's essential to find your niche and stand out with a unique "x-factor."
-
I currently work with JomRun, where people sign up for community runs, hosting diverse events—anything but weddings.
-
Payment varies based on spotlight recognition and experience, often on an hourly or retainer basis with in-house companies which are the structures I'm familiar with.
-
The opportunity to connect with high-profile individuals is an amazing opportunity, but it requires relentless networking, cold emailing, and joining competitive Facebook communities.
