A bit About Me
Hi, my name is Jason Chua! Sharing about my interest in fitness, health and bodybuilding has always been my passion.
Some of you may have seen me online, and if you have ever liked, shared or commented on my videos, I thank you.
- I grew up in Alor Setar, Kedah, and moved to Ipoh, Perak, around age 5 or 6 when I entered primary school.
- The lifestyle at both Alor Setar and Ipoh were very slow-paced.
- I attended St. Michael's Lasalle Boy’s School for both primary and secondary education.
- Being a Boy Scout instilled lasting values and discipline in me.
- As a class clown and a chubbier kid, I often got picked on in an all-boys school, which led to body image insecurities during my teenage years.
- I felt the need to find my purpose and explore my strengths believing that there are "people who cry to cry and people who try to move forward and change."
- The movie Rocky inspired me to get into fitness. At 86 kg in Form 1 in high school, I started jogging to school, 7 km away, everyday.
Skills and Interests
- I progressed in my fitness journey and was featured in Men's Health magazine at 16 for a weight loss challenge accomplishment.
- I started coaching people at a young age with the knowledge I had, knowing my purpose and remaining committed to it kept me going.
- I draw inspiration from Arnold Schwarzenegger's mantra, "Never limit yourself."
- I aim to build an academy for young athletes in overlooked sports that lack government funding and teach them how to monetize their fitness passion.
- I want to combat obesity and diabetes in Malaysia, as both my parents have type two diabetes, by instilling a proper relationship with food and healthy habits in children.
Professional Experience
Mr. Perak, Fitness Trainer & Gym Instructor
- I worked in gyms, supplement stores, and as a trainer before taking a break.
- In 2019, I entered the Mr. Perak competition. However, misaligned mindsets and a lack of balance between social and fitness lifestyles led to illness a week before the competition.
- Soon after that, I fell back into unhealthy habits and faced severe mental health difficulties working in Kuala Lumpur in the media industry.
Content Creator, TikTok Influencer, 160,000+ Followers
- I returned to Ipoh and turned to the media, utilising my gift of speaking fluent Malay.
- Despite hesitations, I joined TikTok and started producing contents about fitness, nutrition, and bodybuilding.
- My fluency in Malay gained traction due to my racially ambiguous appearance.
- I now have a TikTok account with 137K followers and an Instagram with over 27K followers and still growing.
Financial Advice for Athletes
- The lifespan of sports persons is very limited, we are not being taught about life after peaking at sports financially.
- Your physique performance only takes you so far regardless of genetics or background, it can be a short-lived career if you hit a ceiling, leading to financial struggles or stunted success.
- As an influencer now, I'm able to work from anywhere to generate revenues through content engagements.
- I believe that financial education is crucial for athletes to monetize through sponsorships and advertisements.
- Having a digital presence is vital for me to be expanding my support systems and opportunity gateways, but for many, it's an unfortunate turning point in lives.
How To Succeed As Content Creator, KOL
- Motivation: When I started social media at 16, despite online bashing, I kept going, hoping to improve at least one person's life, which keeps me motivated.
- Platform Purpose: I advise finding the platform's purpose and amplifying it, don't overthink or over-plan content, just do it.
- Routine: I incorporate content creation into my strict daily routine, uploading 3-10 videos on my channels, including Xiao Hong Shu (XHS 小红书).
- Language Engagement: Using Malay as my main language engages a supportive community that appreciates cultural incorporation.
