A Bit About Me
We learn most effectively from those who are a bit further along in their journey than we are - just enough that it’s neither too simple and dull, nor too challenging and discouraging.
While I may not have all the answers, I’m always happy to share what I’ve learned through my own experiences.
- I was born and raised in Johor Bahru, Pasir Gudang, with four younger siblings.
- I attended SJKC Chien Chi and SMK Dato Penggawa Timur.
- Growing up near the EDL highway, I experienced a city lifestyle just 10 minutes from Woodlands, Singapore. The area is becoming more expensive due to Singaporean expats living here.
- My typical Asian family emphasised education and health.
- I received a Bursary Scholarship after scoring 9 A+ in SPM in 2013.
- The difference between Scholarships and Bursary is that, the Scholarships are non-repayable awards given to recognize the high level of excellence a student has achieved in his/her studies.
- Bursaries are non-repayable awards allocated on the basis of financial need and without undue emphasis on academic standing.
Educational Journey
Bursary Scholarship
- This non-racial quota scholarship by the Ministry of Education is for non-bumiputra citizens who achieve at least 9 A+ in SPM.
- From 2014 to 2016, I pursued Cambridge A Levels.
- I was informed that if I was accepted into a top 20 ranked university (typically in the US/UK) with a strong pre-university performance, the scholarship might cover degree tuition as well.
- The scholarship provides RM430 monthly allowances and covers living accommodations directly with the institution.
London School of Economics (LSE)
- I pursued Actuarial Science at LSE.
- LSE offers financial aid to underprivileged international students, considering Malaysians as from third-world developing countries.
- The academic environment at LSE is highly career-focused and competitive.
- Students participate in Spring Internships during semester breaks to enhance their CVs.
- I gained mind-opening experiences through interactions with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- I worked part-time at the student hall during online lectures, as student halls were used as hotels during semester breaks.
- I developed communication skills and learned how to navigate around London.
Professional Experience
Lloyds Banking Group
- I worked for two years post-graduation, with only eight months in-office before the COVID lockdown prompted remote work.
- During my first year, I was rotated in Edinburgh, handling analysis and management roles in work pensions.
- In my second year, I focused on investment fund analysis.
- My third year, I worked as a junior data scientist and insurance, fraud, and technical data analyst.
- I noticed the work culture was different from Malaysia, with more cushioned communication styles.
- One thing I loved and appreciated the most about London was their punctual public transportation system.
- The weather in London was often dull, making me miss the Sun occasionally.
- Many Malaysians continued working in London unless bound by scholarship obligations or family ties.
Returning to Malaysia, MoneyLion
- I joined MoneyLion, a US-based digital bank, to experience startup culture as a data scientist for one year.
- The product features small loans catering to the USA’s paycheck-to-paycheck culture, with deductions at the following deposit transaction.
- Data scientists are typically assigned to product or fraud departments.
- The role involved identifying ad hoc fraudsters and halting their transactions by recognizing patterns and targeted areas.
- After mass layoffs due to US tax cuts, I began pursuing my own business.
Entrepreneurial Venture in Digital Marketing
- I started setting up websites for local Malaysian businesses and utilised my data analyst background to delve into SEO.
- Using WordPress, I coded for clients, which required comprehensive planning, as changes post-launch are tedious.
- For eCommerce, I used Shopify, though most clients were service-based.
- SEO services identify keywords that place pages on the first page of search results.
- I adjusted to business goals like leads, conversion, and traffic.
- I conducted research and testing to identify hard and soft keywords.
